
John Benson Sebastian was born in Greenwich Village,
New York on March 17, 1944, Zal Yanovsky was born on
December 19, 1944 in Toronto, Joseph Campbell Butler arrived on
Long Island, New York on September 16, 1941, together they
joined Long Islander Steve Boone to create the Lovin’ Spoonful,
an American pop-rock band that would dominate the charts in the
mid 60’s with what they termed, “good-time music.”
Beginning in 1965, “Do You Believe In Magic” leaped into
the top
ten of
the Hit Parade, followed by “You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice.”
The million
selling streak continued in 1966 with “Daydream,”
“Did You Ever Have
To Make Up Your Mind,” “Summer In The City”
and “Rain On The Roof.”
In 1967 it was chart topper “Nashville Cats.”
With the success of the singles, five different albums exploded in
sales through the later 1960’s. In 2000, the Lovin Spoonful was
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Zalman Yanovsky
died on December 13, 2002, of congestive heart failure at
Kingston,
Ontario, Canada. He was just days away from his
58th birthday.
