The Temptations
The Temptations

A Detroit soul group, the original Temptations was formed in 1960
with Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin
and Elbridge Bryant, who was replaced by David Ruffin in 1964. With
their tailored suits and polished choreography, the Temptations raised
the bar for R&B groups.

With the British invasion sweeping the nation, the Temptations
began their decades long string of pop hits with
“The Way You Do The Things You Do” in 1964. A year later “My Girl”
topped the Hit Parade with “My Girl.” In 1966, “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep”
and “I Know I’m Loosing You” were million sellers. More gold in 1967
with “All I Need” and You’re My Everything.” Three more top five
million sellers, “I Wish It would Rain,” “Cloud Nine” and
I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” followed in 1968. A top five hit,
“Run Away Child, Running Wild” started the year and #1 smash
“I Can’t Get Next To You” topped the charts in 1969. Still two more
gold singles in 1970, “Psychedelic Shack” and “Ball Of Confusion.” Among
the more than fifty hit singles from the Tempations was
another #1 hit, “Just My Imagination” in 1971 followed
with another chart topper, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”
in 1972 and “Masterpiece” in 1973.

With three Grammy awards to their credit, the Temptations were
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
