Lead singer, songwriter Michael Philip Jagger was born on
July 26, 1943; Guitarist, songwriter Keith Richards was born
on December 18, 1943; Drummer Charles Robert Watts was born
on June 2, 1941; Bassist William George Perks (Bill Wyman)
was born on October 24, 1936, together they would be known
as members of “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World”.
Influenced by American Rhythm & Blues music, The Rolling Stones
were formed in London, England in early 1963 and were on the U.S.
charts a year later with “Not Fade Away”, “It’s All Over Now”
and a top ten hit, “Time Is On My Side”.
Among their top ten hits were, “The Last Time”, “As Tears Go By”,
“19th Nervous Breakdown”, “Mothers Little Helper”, “Jumpin’ Jack
Flash”, “Tumbling Dice”, “Beast of Burden”, “Emotional Rescue”,
“Start Me Up”, “Harlem Shuffle” and “Mixed Emotions”.
“I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” was their first #1 in 1965. It was
followed by “Get Off My Cloud” and “Paint It Black” in 1966,
“Ruby Tuesday” in 1967, “Honky Tonk Woman” in 1969,
“Brown Sugar” in 71’, “Angie” in 1973 and chart topper
“Miss You” in 1978.
Almost all Rolling Stones hits were written by Mick Jagger and
Keith Richards. As one of the most successful bands in show
business, they continue to record and are one of the highest
grossing concert acts on tour year after year. In 2005,
the Stones set a record of $162 million gross receipts, breaking
the previous North American mark also set by the Stones in 1994.
Recently the band played to a massive crowd of 1.5 million fans
on the beach at Rio de Janeiro.
At 60 years of age, Mick Jagger became a “Sir” after being
knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his "services to popular music".
The Rolling Stones were inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
